(22 Oct 2021) One day after two foreigners were killed and three others wounded in a shooting at a restaurant, tourists were back on the streets of the Mexican Caribbean resort town of Tulum. A woman from Germany and another from India were killed during the incident, according to the district attorney's office, in what is believed to have been a crossfire in a land dispute between rival organised crime groups. The three wounded persons included two Germans and a tourist from the Netherlands. "The day the shooting happened I was here, I was at the corner and when everything happened I laid on the ground," said Roberto Carlos, a local resident and artisan. "There is some insecurity and you have to be on alert." On Friday, tourists strolled on the beach front whilst others peaked inside the cordoned off restaurant where fresh flowers were laid next to blood stains on the pavement. "I think that's what was surprising as we figured that this type of crime wouldn't necessarily be where the main tourists areas are, just because it is such a big part of the economy here," said James Graham, visiting from the United States. Tulum has experienced growing pains moving from laid back beach retreat to major international destination. It had long been spared the violence seen sporadically in larger Cancun and Playa del Carmen farther up the coast.
