Elbow pain is more common than many people realize, and it often develops slowly over time. Two of the most common types are tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow, and both can make everyday activities frustrating. Tennis elbow typically causes pain on the outer side of the elbow. This discomfort often shows up during activities that involve gripping, lifting, or rotating the forearm—things like using tools, turning a screwdriver, or twisting a jar lid. Golfer’s elbow, on the other hand, usually affects the inner side of the elbow. It can flare up during movements that involve wrist flexion, gripping, or repetitive arm use. Despite their names, you don’t have to play sports to experience either of these conditions. In many cases, elbow pain develops from repetitive overuse of the joint, which can irritate the tendons and create inflammation around the elbow. When that irritation builds up, the joint may become sensitive, stiff, and painful during everyday tasks.
