On December 27, the Church remembers Father Alexander Bryant, SJ (1581) — an English Jesuit priest and martyr whose steadfast faith under unimaginable torture astonished even his persecutors. Refusing to betray fellow priests, reveal where he had said Mass, or disclose whose confessions he had heard, he endured extreme tortures — including needles thrust beneath his fingernails — without wavering. Throughout his suffering, Father Bryant calmly recited Psalm 50 (Miserere), praying for the forgiveness of his tormentors. Even hardened officials were shaken by his serenity, with one remarking that such faith alone was enough to convert a man not settled in his religion. Despite repeated sessions on the rack — his body disjointed, blood congealed, and senses failing — Father Alexander Bryant resolved to die rather than harm any living soul by word or deed.
