The season at the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre opened with a concert performance of Donizetti's opera Lucia di Lammermoor. On the evening of 15 September a unique cast headed by Natalie Dessay as Lucia and Piotr Beczała as Edgardo conducted by Valery Gergiev performed the opera. One undeniable surprise for the audience, which included inveterate music lovers, was an appearance by Sascha Reckert, a German musician who plays a nowadays rare instrument -- the glass harmonica. It was this instrument that was used in the heroine's famous mad scene where the audience is more used to hearing a combination of the soprano and the flute that repeats her music.
