Written solely by Gaye, it became regarded as one of popular music's most poignant anthems of sorrow regarding the environment. Bob Babbitt and James Jamerson, both legends, were the bassists on the album. Jamerson was the bassist on the songs on side 1 (he played bass on “What’s Going On”) of the original vinyl and Babbitt on the songs on side 2. Bob Babbitt Robert Andrew Kreinar (November 26, 1937 – July 16, 2012), known as Bob Babbitt, was a Hungarian-American bassist, most famous for his work as a member of Motown Records' studio band, the Funk Brothers, from 1966 to 1972, as well as his tenure as part of MFSB for Philadelphia International Records afterwards. PERSONNEL Marvin Gaye – lead and background vocals, piano, Mellotron The Andantes – additional background (harmony) vocals Wild Bill Moore – tenor saxophone solo David Van De Pitte – string conduction The Funk Brothers – James Jamerson (1959–1972)* Bob Babbitt (1967–1972)* COVER THOUGHTS Timing, timing, timing, for the most part I was accurate but not 100%. Babbitt’s isolated bass, especially in the opening, sounds like what horns would do, only on bass.
