CHAOS and CANCELLATIONS at Carlisle after BROKEN RAIL 01 Oct 24 I'd expected an uneventful day but it slowly descended into chaos with Cancellations all over the place. The freight trains heading south ran to time. The lunchtime Engineer's train to Basford Hall didn't run and the northbound Tesco train got caught up in the aftermath of the broken rail. First there were delays to northbound services due to trespassing north of Crewe. Then I noticed the 1058 to Leeds over the Settle & Carlisle line had been cancelled following cancellation of a morning train from Leeds. A bus had been put on - quite a challenge - from Skipton and return. I never saw it so can't verify it happened. The announcements of a broken rail. Eventually we established this was around Southwaite, The Down / Northbound line was closed for around four and a half hours. First trains were delayed and then cancelled. There was a short hiatus on the Up line but not for long, Once the line was clear again Avanti and TransPennine had trains all over the place. A lack of units in Scotland mainly. Northbound Avanti trains had been cancelled at Preston - the usual practise. A couple of rail replacement buses were laid on, to Penrith and to Glasgow but nothing significant. There were other cancellations - a total of 16 on Northern's routes mostly on the Tyne Valley line down to manpower issues.
