In 1923, a family fled grinding poverty and endless wars in Poland. They sought a better life in the coal fields of France. Then war came. What was life like for them under German occupation? How did the men manage to escape and join the Polish Free Army? What was the contribution of the Poles to World War 2? All of this real history was the inspiration behind Graham Loveluck-Edwards’ latest book, entitled Monica. It tells the story of this remarkable family from the perspective of its youngest member. A little girl who was not going to let the war get in the way of her accomplishing great things. Things that previous generations could not have dreamed of, but accomplished thanks to the pace of change and social mobility in post war 20th century Europe. After the war, the soldiers of the Polish Free Army who had a trade were given the opportunity to settle in Britain. This led to them settling in South Wales. This video was part of the book launch and gave the author an opportunity to talk about the real history which inspired the book. It was recorded in front of a live audience at Cowbridge Town Hall on Saturday 7th October 2023.
