A geologically diverse region, which could hold the mysteries to an ancient Mars. Jezero crater is thought to have been an ancient lake. The inlet into the lake appears to be a river delta, where sediments like clay and silt build up over time. NASA believes this area to be a prime location to look for evidence of ancient life. Whether looking for stromatolites (microbial fossils) or understanding the formation of the crater itself, there is a lot to learn from this area. Recent studies have also shown that Jezero crater has deposits of carbonates. These carbonates will be useful in understanding the history of the crater itself, and whether or not the environment was right for life! When deciding to land at Jezero Crater, NASA also has to check the terrain and make sure the rover will not get stuck as it makes its way across Mars. Thanks for watching!
