How to Bend a Box Offset in Conduit

In this day and age, the bending of conduit for branch circuitry seems to be going to the wayside in lieu of different wiring methods such as MC cable. However, it’s still a viable way to install branch circuitry and can be found on many jobsites. In today’s episode of Electrician U, Dustin walks us through how to get your conduit into a junction/device box by bending a box offset. 🤘⚡️EU Learning System⚡️🤘 For Individuals --- https://electricianu.com/learning-sys... Today’s sponsor- Penn Aluminum Conduit & EMT- makes some of the best aluminum conduit on the market. But why choose aluminum EMT over steel EMT? Well, it’s considerably lighter therefore it takes less labor to install and reduces wear and tear on your field staff hauling conduit around. Next, it’s much easier to bend than steel, again, making it less strenuous for your staff to install and using less labor. It’s also cheaper than steel currently, so it helps on the bottom line. Penn Aluminum has even engineered a coating for the inside of the conduit called Blue Lightning that helps with wire pulling and eliminates the snagging most often associated with aluminum conduit. Well worth it to try! A box offset is no different than a standard offset (which has been covered in previous videos), it is just a much smaller version specifically for the conduit to enter a junction or device box. The height of the offset is somewhere between 3/8” to ½”. Some would ask why even bother with an offset that small? Aesthetics is the answer! If you did not bend a box offset when installing conduit into your junction box, you would be left with a sloping piece of conduit entering the box and the installation would look like an amateur did it! The actual action of bending the offset is the same as a standard minus the measuring and marking. The minimal height of the offset won’t allow any marking of the two bending points as the bender shoe is too large. To start, put the conduit into the bender shoe lining up the end of the conduit close to or flush with the bender shoe. Apply minimal pressure and bend ever so slightly. Then, just like a normal offset, flip the conduit over 180 degrees. The trick here is to slide the conduit forward so that the bender shoe is almost up against the first bend you made. Now, bend about the same amount that you did on the first one and voila, you are done. As with conduit bending in general, bending box offsets do take practice since there is no marking required (or possible). When first starting out, you will bend them either too much or not enough and will dog leg the bend if you do not flop the conduit over 180 degrees. You just must learn to eyeball the amounts of bends needed and you will get the hang of it in no time at all! The goal of a box offset is to have the conduit enter the box as straight as the conduit leading up to it (on the same plane) just with a 3/8”-1/2” gap!
