Focus stacking (what Canon calls focus bracketing) is a process for expanding the depth of field by stacking images with different focus positions. The process can be used to create images with much more depth of field than can be achieved by simply stopping down. Alternatively, it can be used with a wide aperture to create smooth out-of-focus backgrounds while still insuring that the subject remains in focus. In the EOS R series, and specifically for the EOS R5, focus stacking can be automated using the Focus Bracketing menu entry. This video covers the in-camera options available on the EOS R5 Note, this video does not cover the post-processing that’s necessary to create stacked images. The focus bracket set stops shooting either when it reaches the number of exposures that you've specified, or the lens reaches infinity focus. In an effort to help limit focus bracket sizes, I've written a calculator that estimates the number of images you need to focus bracket between two distances (e.g. from 10 cm to 25 cm).
