(13 Sep 2000) Indonesian/Nat XFA A car bomb ripped through a garage beneath Jakarta's stock exchange on Wednesday, setting off a chain of exploding vehicles that, police said, killed at least 10 people and injured 27 others. Police said thick black smoke billowed into the capital's main avenue and hampered rescuers trying to reach victims trapped in the three-level underground garage, where the blast caused dozens of cars inside the crowded lot to catch fire and explode. It was the latest in a series of unexplained bombings in Indonesia and was a blow to President Abdurrahman Wahid, who has accused his political enemies of using terror tactics to destabilize his reformist government. Firefighters doused the flames and fumbled through the darkness of the garage to pull out victims many hours after the blast. Most of the dead suffocated in the smoke and some were found in the charred remains of their cars. Ten dead were reported by spokesmen from Pertamina and Cipto Mangunkusumo hospitals. More than 1,000 office workers were evacuated after the blast, which went off 45 minutes before the closing of markets. Police ordered that trading be suspended for the rest of the week while they investigate. But Herwieayatmo (sic), the chairman of Capital Market Supervisory Agency indicated trading could begin sooner. The police chief Roes Bihareao said the explosion was believed to have originated in a red car parked in the second basement level. Mysterious explosions have coincided with every major stage of a state investigation into allegations of massive corruption by former dictator Suharto, who ruled Indonesia for 32 years until riots in 1998. A bomb exploded just before Suharto's case went before a court two weeks ago. It is scheduled to resume Thursday, when doctors will be questioned about whether he is fit to stand trial. The police chief said security would be stepped up in places of "popular interest" but warned against panic. Police said 400 vehicles had been damaged or destroyed in Wednesday's blast. The garage was packed with cars and drivers waiting for stockbrokers and other executives to finish work. At least 27 injured were brought to Pertamina hospital. Many victims were covered in black dust and had trouble breathing. Others had been badly cut by flying glass. SOUNDBITE: (ENGLISH) "Just one loud blast. We were on the 15th floor and there was an alarm and they evacuated the building. It was about 3.30." SUPER CAPTION: Paul Adams, Eyewitness SOUNDBITE: (Indonesian) "(Q; Where were you?) I was in the basement of the office. (Q: So bomb was in the basement?) "I don't know if it was a bomb or not. There was just a sudden explosion. Boom!" SUPER CAPTION: Bambang, Blast survivor SOUNDBITE: (Indonesian) "We will increase the security in vital places especially places of people's interest. The most important thing now is to alert the people to beware not to be panicked because panic situation is exactly what our enemies want. If the people see something unusual they're to report it to us (the police)." SUPER CAPTION: Roes Bihareao, Chief of Indonesian Police SOUNDBITE: (English) "Tomorrow we'll wait for clarification from the police and then we want to consolidate the system. Then we'll make a test of the engines of the trading and then announce continuation of trading. We hope that the trading activity itself should be ready and started by Monday, at least. Tomorrow we'll be closed."
