February 2003 was the first but not the last time I thought about leaving America. That was right after the World Wide NO WAR IN IRAQ protests. Remember that? 15 million people in 800 cities world wide marched all over creation, not to end a war but to stop a war from ever starting. - We all know how that ended up, right? At the time it was devastating. What was devastating was the CLUNK of a huge penny dropping on 15 million peace marcher's heads at once. After coming to our senses we all had a new understanding of democracy. It meant We could exercise our democratic right to protest whatever We wanted, and likewise, the establishment could exercise their democratic right to ignore us. Sounds quaint and naive in 2023, doesn't it? - At the time it had a neutering effect on my ability to protest. Like millions of Americans, I couldn't do anything about my geography so I kept my trap shut. Ten years later, 2013, it was a different story. I had options. I began planning not migration, just an extended working holiday. It took longer than I thought to put my house in order. Early in 2016 everything was finally in place. All that was left to do was figure out a destination. - A couple of "things" happened that helped make up our minds. One was the Pulse nightclub shooting, that took place in Orlando Florida in June, 49 dead and more than 50 wounded. It was the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history up to that time. The other thing happened in July. I read an article by Michael Moore titled "5 Reasons Why Trump Will Win." Harmony read the article too. The first thing she said was, "Can we go somewhere with no guns?" I said, "Guns are everywhere. But Australia's only got a few guns." Harmony said, "Great!" We went there in November 2016. - We had been booked to play a folk festival in the town of Maldon, Victoria, which is about 80 miles NW from Melbourne Airport. After checking in the very first person we spoke to was Guru Bruce AKA Bruce Watson. Bruce was very groovy. He introduced us to our future band mates (The Trippy Hippy Band) and we lived on his farm for a while, til Harmony & I got our bearings. Bruce was also focal in 2021, helping to facilitate our passage back to Australia after Covid had stranded Harmony & I in Bali for over a year. - Viewers will learn more about Guru Bruce when our documentary "It's Always Woodstock Somewhere: the Joe & Harmony Story" goes live next Tuesday, August 15.
