Hangin with our long time pal JP Harris. This ones been a long time in the making. Me and JP made something years ago for his more old-time music (he's an accomplished old-time banjo player, btw), but for one reason or another it didn't see the light of day and we shelved it. Now he has a record coming down the pipeline with his country stuff, so we decided to have another go at it. When he isn't being a carpenter, JP plays sweet country tunes with ace players, and we talk a bit about country music songwriting, about rizz and the times. JP is a cool feller with a lot of varied skills. Barbara Dee, a song for his momma, reminds me fondly of my own, and my aunties. That's what good writing does I suppose, letting you see yourself and your people in the narrative. Southern ladies smelling of hairspray and driving oldsmobiles, caddilacs and other land boats. That's Erin Rae singing backup with him, the Nashville native and incredible songwriter/vocalist in her own right. One of the very first GemsOnVHS sessions too - back 12 years ago. We're playing in a pretty great space, Soft Junk, on the east side in Nashville. They do a lot of events, DIY shows and the like.
