El Camino Real is a single-pitch “trad” route at The Book in Lumpy Ridge. The route begins up the first 40 feet of 5.9 of the route Howling at the Wind, and then cuts right to gain an overhanging open book. 60 feet of relentless liebacking, stemming, and granite vodoo take you past a miriad of fixed protection, including RPs and 3 bolts. The entire open book is protected by fixed gear, making for more or a sport climbing experience than a traditional outing. When I climbed this, I opted to leave all the gear I had placed on the opening 5.9 during my attempt earlier that morning, as well as all the quickdraws on the upper section. This made for a true sport ascent of the line. A proper trad ascent without the fixer gear would be a much more proud endeavor, I suspect, as even stopping to clip the fixed gear was challenging for me.
