After the era of kings, sculptural art began to gradually decline due to a lack of patronage and foreign invasions.Ancient sculptural texts and sastras started disappearing, leaving only a few surviving works. To protect this fading art form, the Sankaracharya of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham, Jagadguru Pujyasri Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Swamigal, took the initiative in 1950.He organized a massive gathering (Sadas) of scholars from across India at Ilayathangudi, under the name "Agama Silpa Yaga Purathana Kala," which subsequently became an annual event. With the intent to formally preserve and teach this art, Jagadguru PujyasriSri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi ShankaracaryaSwamigal envisioned the creation of a dedicated sculpture college. His dream was ultimately fulfilled by Jagadguru PujyasriSri Jayendra Saraswathi ShankaracaryaSwamigal. In 1996, Sri SankaraSilpaKalaikalloori (Sri Sankara Sculpture College) was officially established under Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Viswa Mahavidyalaya, Deemed to be University, Kanchipuram (SCSVMV). To provide students with an inspiring and culturally rich learning environment, the college was set up within the mandapam of Sri Kanchi Kamakshi Amman temple. The renowned sculptor, Padma Shri Ganapathi Sthapati, served as the first principal of the college. The college offers a 4 -year diploma training program in sculptural arts.During its first year, 7 students were admitted, with the goal of expanding to around 50 students across the full 5-year program.Strict discipline and conduct are required of the students enrolled in the college. The comprehensive curriculum trains students in architectural proportions, vimanas (towers), idols, floor plans, and cross-sectional elevations. To fully support their education, SCSVMV provides students with free food, accommodation, and all necessary materials, including sculpting tools, pencils, and paper. After many years, the Silpa Sastra Patasala was relocated to the main university premises. To support both the academic and practical needs of the students, a dedicated, unified building was constructed to serve as both the space for theoretical classrooms and the workshed for their hands-on sculpting practice.
