Reunion Part Deux- Grand Brule and Cirque de Cilaos

I opted to take a bus from St. Denis all of the way along the eastern coast of the island. Le Grand Brule' (The Big Burn) is the major feature here as this is where the active volcano spills its lava into the ocean. As in all volcanic areas, it is amazing to see how life grows back. I entered the Cirque de Cilaos in the late afternoon. The access road to get to the village of Cilaos is a feat of engineering.... with twists and turns, bridges, tunnels... and a racing heart (and I was only a bus passenger.) Cilaos is located on a high plateau surrounded by yet higher cliffs- the cirque. Morning in Cilaos was precious with the warm light and moisture-laden clouds spilling over the bowl's rim into town. What's more, the temperatures were much cooler up here than on the coast.
