Altough according to Paul, John might have actually liked these kinds of songs : "Both John and I had a great love for music hall, what the Americans call vaudeville. I'd heard a lot of that kind of music growing up with The Billy Cotton Band Show and all of that on the radio. I was also an admirer of people like Fred Astaire. I very much liked that old crooner style, the strange fruity voice that they used, so 'Honey Pie' was me writing one of them to an imaginary woman, across the ocean, on the silver screen, who was called 'Honey Pie.' It's another of my fantasy songs." Paul wrote the track between his return from India in March and the Esher sessions in May 1968. However, Paul only brought to the song to Trident Studios on October 1st, in some of the last recording sessions for the White Album. The band rehearsed the track many times before recording what became the rhythm track, which was tagged as Take 1, therefore there are no outtakes available. The band only recorded the rhythm track consisting of Paul on piano, John on guitar, George on the newly acquired Bass VI and Ringo on drums that day, and returned to the track the following day for overdubs. Paul added his vocals, Ringo some cymbal overdubs and John two guitar parts, including a very well played solo. Here's George talking about that solo in Guitar Player : "John played a brilliant solo on ‘Honey Pie’ from the White Album – sounded like Django Reinhardt or something. It was one of them where you just close your eyes and happen to hit all the right notes. Sounded like a little jazz solo." George Martin wrote a saxophone and clarinet arrangement that was recorded on October 4th, a session for both Honey Pie and Martha My Dear. The only thing missing at this point, was a vocal effect that Paul wanted on his voice to make it sound "old-timey" : "We put a sound on my voice to make it sound like a scratchy old record. The engineers used a lot of EQ technology to adjust the frequencies, which gives it that little trebly megaphone feel" Personnel John Lennon : Guitars Paul McCartney : Piano, vocals George Harrison : Bass Ringo Starr : Drums Thanks to my Patrons for supporting me : Con George, Aldo Ramal, Jason W, Lautaro Hourcade, ST, Sam Rose, BattleXGamer, Tilt Araiza, bmmp, Jake Stratford, Cody McGrew, Eli Rosen, Julian, Jeff Chandler, Chris Dee, César Prieb, breakfastinfur, Lucas Brown, Cade, Thomas Howard, John Sturges, AV AI, Walter, Sam Cooke Fan Club, Tim Kim Ware, Mitch, Cyril Montreau, Joel Iglesias, Zack O'Brien, Joakim Arnt Holmen, Andy Carne, Met Samuel, Luis Carlos González Morales, Sondre Fredrikstad, Drew Barlow, Kam Chuen So, Arch Sigma Studios, Luis, Bradley Hughes, David J Halls, Jesús Alberto Cortés Escobar, DeepBreath, Paul Poppleton, Paul LaDue, Evan Shenfield, Erick Falc'her-Poyroux, Jens Langhans, Juan Esteban Garzón, Juandi Pava, Jeff Cardella and moondog!
