We visited Sakuramatsu Shrine (櫻松神社) in Hachimantai, Iwate Prefecture, for hatsumōde (初詣) — the first Shinto shrine visit of the New Year. The shrine grounds and surrounding forest were covered in deep winter snow, and access required careful walking along cleared paths leading up to the shrine buildings. Close to the shrine are Fudō Falls, which were partially frozen during our visit. Below the falls, a wooden bridge crosses the stream, offering a clear view of flowing water surrounded by snow and ice. The contrast between the winter landscape and the moving water is a notable feature of this area in Hachimantai during winter. After completing our hatsumōde, we had amazake, served warm near the shrine. This traditional sweet rice drink is commonly offered during New Year visits and was welcome after spending time outdoors in the cold and snow.
