A first-of-its-kind Eucharistic Congress for the Deaf was held in Emmitsburg, Maryland, attracting over 200 participants from across the United States and around the world. The three-day event included speakers, adoration, confession, Mass, and fellowship, offering a unique opportunity for the deaf Catholic community to engage with the sacraments using sign language. The event was inspired by the National Eucharistic Congress in Indianapolis and was organized under the leadership of Father Mike Depcik. With fewer than 10 deaf priests in the U.S. serving the entire deaf Catholic population, this congress provided a vital space for deaf Catholics to connect spiritually. Speakers and priests emphasized the significance of ASL in making the teachings of the Church more accessible, with some noting how the experience of the Gospel in sign language brings the Scriptures to life in a unique and powerful way. The hope is that this congress will become an annual event, growing in size and impact as word spreads through the deaf Catholic community.
