Portugal’s centre-right coalition has won a knife-edge victory over the ruling Socialists as the populist right-wing party Chega quadrupled its number of seats. The centre-left Socialists conceded defeat and are set to leave power after eight years in government following a corruption scandal that led to the resignation of António Costa, the prime minister, the dissolution of parliament and a snap election. The result represents a significant gain for the right in the EU, where right-wing parties have won elections or joined coalitions in Italy, Greece, Sweden and Finland in the past two years.
