If You Don't Understand That God Is in Charge, You're Going to Get Discouraged

Sermon delivered by His Eminence Metropolitan Demetrius of America at Saint John of San Francisco Orthodox Monastery, Cobleskill, NY. In this deeply edifying sermon, delivered on the Sunday commemorating the Seven Ecumenical Councils, Metropolitan Demetrius invites us on a journey into the heart of Orthodox Christian identity. Metropolitan Demetrius begins by drawing parallels between the persistence of the two blind men crying out to Christ in the Gospel passage and our own spiritual walk. Just as they repeatedly called out, "Christ, our son of David, have mercy on me," and "the son of David have mercy on me," we too, as Orthodox Christians, must persist in prayer, calling out to the Lord "again and again" as He "continuously passes by our way." This persistence, however, must be coupled with humility. The Metropolitan stresses that we "cannot go by our timetable but we must go by the timetable of the Lord, for He is the one who knows all things." Our humility comes from understanding "His greatness and we will understand our nothingness." Unfortunately, "we do exalt ourselves sometimes and we even act as if we know better than God." Synergy and faith in Orthodox spiritual life The sermon delves into crucial lessons from the Gospel, particularly the importance of diligent persistence in prayer. Metropolitan Demetrius cautions against impatience, noting that "people pray a little bit and then they pray a little longer and then they think, 'well, nothing's changing,' and this is a delusion and this is a trick of the devil." He reminds us of the Lord's words, "In your patience possess your soul." The Lord's delayed response to the blind men was a lesson, illustrating Saint Isaac's teaching that "a gift given to somebody without the proper preparation can turn out to be disastrous for that person." Often, when people "get what they want, they forget about God," neglecting the ultimate necessity: "that we must unite to Him for whom we are made." A central theme is synergy, the cooperation between humanity and God. Metropolitan Demetrius clarifies that "we don't have any type of magical, for lack of a better word, incantations that we do as Orthodox Christians. We must have faith continuously." He cites the ongoing miracles attributed to "Saint Clair,” emphasizing that "there's great faith" and "a synergy" from those who approach him, combined with the Saint's powerful intercession before the Lord. The sermon then connects these spiritual principles to the Seven Ecumenical Councils. Metropolitan Demetrius addresses the accusation leveled against Christ—that "He is accused of expelling the demons by the demons, by the Prince of the demons." He draws a parallel to the Church's experience across generations, where "heretics accused the Orthodox and confused many people," acting as "blind leaders of the blind." In contrast, the fathers of the Seven Ecumenical Councils, referred to in the scriptures as the "seven pillars," made "confession of faith," not "contention." Metropolitan Demetrius further explores the concept of acquiring the "mindset of Christ." This "takes a lot of work," leading the Fathers to say, "don't trust yourself so much." He reconciles the idea of not trusting our own reasoning with being the "rational flock of Christ" by explaining the "battle between the old man and the new man." The sermon highlights that only in the Orthodox Church do we find the ancient faith where the Seven Ecumenical Councils are honored in their "prominent places." Metropolitan Demetrius contrasts this with Protestant and Catholic traditions. The Metropolitan concludes by emphasizing that in the Orthodox Church, "we find the tradition and the perfect example of holiness in the saints of God who had attained Theosis." We look to them and "ask them for help." He warns against "contentious people" today whose "fruits" reveal they are "not god-inspired," and whose accusations are "not in any way in sync with the spirit of the fathers of the church." Finally, Metropolitan Demetrius implores that we "honor all the holy fathers of the Seven Ecumenical Councils who had articulated to us the dogma of the holy Church." He prays that through their intercessions, we "continue as Orthodox Christians and always to be protected from all manner of heresy," delivered from schism, and preserved in the Orthodox faith. May we acquire the "keen mind of Christ," gained by "repentance," enabling us to "perceive the wolves from the goats from the sheep." May the Lord grant us the humility and patience to navigate life's struggles, always adhering to His timetable, and ultimately be deemed worthy to enter His Kingdom. Amen.
