Nestled in an almost inaccessible cove between Staithes and Runswick Bay is an historic port. Originally built as a harbour for ships carrying iron ore (mined from the cliffs up to Victorian times) to Newcastle it was later a fishing port, and to this day small wooden boats go out to lay their lobster pots in the bay. The harbour walls were destroyed in WW2 to prevent enemy landings. Although how the enemy would have got up the cliffs….. The only way up and down now is by rope and it’s quite a haul up, so the beach doesn’t get many visitors. The old fisherman huts are used by generations of families, who have created little havens of peace and seclusion. Some live there almost full time, making a simple living from gathering fossils and jet (fossilised monkey puzzle tree) which can be sold in nearby Whitby. Ideally take 30 minutes (or 2x15) off from your day, cuddle up somewhere cosy and watch on a big screen. Enjoy 🙏♥️🦋
