This is a 20-minute video of action from the first 3 1/2 innings of the April 14, 1974 Major League Baseball game between the Detroit Tigers and the Red Sox in Boston, won by the Sox, 7-5. It is film from the WCVB Collection, transferred by Northeast Historical Film. Thanks to NHF for the OK to post it with watermarks; for information on obtaining a clean copy visit www.oldfilm.org. This game marked the first start for the Red Sox by Hall of Famer Juan Marichal, a Giant the previous 14 seasons. The Fenway Park fans were eager to see the high-leg-kicking righty. However, he wasn't at his best, getting a no-decision, giving up five earned runs and six hits over 3 1/3 innings with four walks and one strikeout. You know you're scuffling when you give up a two-run homer to Ed Brinkman. But the Fenway denizens still gave Marichal polite applause when he was relieved. He went 5-1 in 1974 but was injured from mid-May to early August. He pitched in two games for the Dodgers in 1975 before retiring. Dwight Evans, super sub John Kennedy, and Carl Yastrzemski all homer for the Red Sox, and Yaz adds a two-run double and Juan Beniquez an RBI single, all off lefty Mickey Lolich (0-3).
