My journey from Morocco to West Africa continues with a visit to the enchanting, colorful, and charming city of Essaouira, Morocco. This must visit fishing town and captivating coastal gem is perched along Morocco's Atlantic coast directly west of Marrakesh, and is hands down one of Africa's best kept secrets, and well worth visiting! Essaouira is one of Morocco's most beautiful and charming destinations, featuring a bustling and active fishing harbour jutted up against centuries-old fortifications and ramparts. Known for its lively souks (markets) filled to the brim with colorful, aromatic spices and intricate textiles, this UNESCO World Heritage site is truly a feast for the senses. Join me in this video, as I spent two days in this charming historic city, getting lost down its vibrant mosaic of narrow, winding streets in its vibrant medina, taking in the sun and surf along its white sand beaches, and exploring its history as one of Moroco's most important historic military sites (I even meet the "Dustin Hoffman of Africa"- LOL). This was the perfect laid-back seaside town for breaking up my long overland journey from Morocco to West Africa, to rest and recharge before my long journey south into the Western Sahara.
