In this video, I break down the lighting setup for this stylistic, moody, cinematic garage workout scene. My buddy Ian and I got together to hang out, test out a new light meter, and mess around with some ideas, which turned into a full cinematic lighting breakdown. I walk through how we lit the room for filming from start to finish, starting with the wide shot and then adjusting and cheating the lighting as we moved in closer. This isn’t a scripted tutorial or a gear review — it’s just me talking through the thought process behind the lighting, what worked, tricks we used, and why certain choices were made. Nanlite sent me a few lights in exchange for this breakdown, but the goal is to explain cinematic lighting techniques in a real-world setup, not sell gear. Everything here can be applied whether you’re using professional gear or figuring out how to light a room at home. I’ve got more lighting breakdowns coming soon!
