Campaigners are expressing concerns over reported instances of illicit 'virginity repair' surgeries performed in NHS hospitals. Last year, authorities banned this unnecessary procedure, designed to simulate the tearing of the hymen during intercourse by creating an artificial layer of scar tissue. Prior to the ban in July, private clinics charged substantial fees, up to £3,000, for the brief 30-minute operation. A specific demographic feeling pressured to undergo this procedure included Muslim women and girls, influenced by familial and spousal expectations of virginity on their wedding night. As of the ban, individuals found involved in conducting or facilitating such procedures in the UK may face imprisonment for up to five years and/or an unlimited fine. Analysis of NHS data reveals that 19 hymenoplasties were conducted in English hospitals between April 2022 and March of the following year.
