If there's a phrase that seems to mystify those who've had little or no experience of an eating disorder, it's the concept of 'mental hunger'. And for those who are recovering, sometimes it can be hard to believe that this overwhelming need and desire is a genuine call for more and more nutritional satiety, rather than merely a matter of greed. Does mental hunger exist therefore? Gosh yes. If you're thinking about food obsessively, searching it out, dreaming about it, planning it, procrastinating over it, truth is then, you're most likely restricting and in mental hunger. What's challenging for many, is responding to this mental hunger - particularly when it could be that your body is calling for you to eat many many thousands of calories more than you've previously allowed yourself to accept. It's also tough when faced with the curious glances and comments of those 'uneducated' in eating disorders, who might unhelpfully want to pass comment on what or how much you're eating. Trust your body on this one. Know mental hunger is real and that all the time you deny it, you're sustaining restriction and maintaining ill health. What would you rather?
