In this presentation Dr. Jerrod Brown Dr.Jerrod Brown, PhD, MA, MS, MS, MS, MS, MS offers a comprehensive look at how lifestyle medicine can help people with brain injuries. https://www.aiafs.com/Jerrod-Brown.asp Lifestyle medicine is an approach that helps treat and prevent various chronic conditions. The approach relies on six core pillars—nutrition, physical activity, sleep, stress management, social connection, and avoiding harmful substances—to address the root causes of illness is certainly helpful for people with all types of conditions. An interesting thing happened during this presentation. Many brain injured people commented and shared that the information was helpful and informative, rightly so. However many un-brain injured people commented that this information led them to think that people with brain injury and people without brain injury are dealing with the same issues. This is not true in any way because brain injury is devastating and leads to invisible problems. The fact that lifestyle medicine helps brain injured people does not therefore mean that brain injured people are dealing with the same issues as people who don’t have a brain injury. As Dr. Jerrod Brown discusses many different aspects of lifestyle medicine, he never speaks about brain injury and how it is different. That is part of the problem with brain injury because it is invisible and is often misunderstood. Below are 3 examples of discussions with brain injured people about their invisible problems, from the Experiencing My Brain podcast. In these 3 examples the individuals share how walks in nature, yoga, and tai chi helped them with their brain injury problems. Importantly they also share a great deal about their specific brain injury problems and how strange, consuming, and different these problems are. Although these are 3 example stories, every brain injured person deals with brain injury problems that are very different from problems faced by those without brain injury. Take some time to listen to these brain injury examples and these ideas will make more sense.
