Castleview Mills, located near Clonakilty, Co. Cork, is the most complete example of a multi-storey flour mill in County Cork and is one of five most important buildings of its type in Ireland. Dating to c. 1800, the main building is an impressive four-bay, five-storey over basement mill, with paired gables to the south-western elevation and a wheel pit along the north-eastern elevation. In the early 20th century the overshot waterwheel was replaced by a mixed-flow American scroll turbine of c. 1918 date, which is still the only working example of its type in Britain and Ireland. In addition, there is a uniquely-placed grain drying kiln, located on the floor above the miller’s living quarters. Castleview Mills received funding for conservation works through the Community Monuments Fund in 2022, 2023 and 2024. Works in 2022 involved the repair and the replacement of rotten timbers to first, second and third floors as well as the replacement of the corrugated iron roof over the grain drying kiln. In 2023 the works carried out included repairs to roof parapets and external party walls/chimney as well as repairs to window lintels, repairs to first floor loft and repair and crack-tying to major crack in north-west elevation. The 2024 work saw the meticulous reslating of the south-western façade of the mill building, as well as the provision of replacement sash windows and repair to doors.
