Lismore Castle (Caisleán an Leasa Mhóir) is the Irish home of the Duke of Devonshire. The castle itself is closed to the public, but the grounds and a small contemporary art gallery are open to visitors. Built in 1185 by Prince John to guard the river crossing, the castle site was originally occupied by Lismore Abbey, an important seat of learning established in the early 7th century. The castle was held by the Earls of Desmond until the killing of the 15th Earl of Desmond in 1583. In 1589, Lismore was leased and later acquired by Sir Walter Raleigh. Raleigh sold the property during his imprisonment for High Treason in 1602 to another infamous colonial adventurer, Richard Boyle. In 1626 the Earl's fourteenth child was born at Lismore, Robert Boyle, The Father of Modern Chemistry. The castle, along with all other Boyle properties, was acquired by the Cavendish family in 1753 when Lady Charlotte Boyle married the Marquess of Hartington, who in 1755 became the 4th Duke of Devonshire. Another famous inhabitant of Lismore was Adele Astaire, the sister and dancing partner of Fred Astaire, who married the 9th Duke of Devonshire in 1932.
