At PRM, we encourage patients who are planning to have endometriosis excision surgery to go through pre-habilitation to prepare their body for healing. Dr. Ally explains what we mean by that! Dr. Allyson Shrikhande is a board certified Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation specialist, Chief Medical Officer of Pelvic Rehabilitation Medicine, and an expert in women’s and men’s health and sexual health. A leading expert on pelvic health and a respected researcher, author and lecturer, Dr. Shrikhande is a recognized authority on female and male pelvic pain diagnosis and treatment. Dr. Shrikhande is passionate about this cause and dedicated to helping women and men with pelvic pain who often suffer without anyone willing to listen, understand or find the cause of their pain. At Pelvic Rehabilitation Medicine, our pelvic pain specialists provide a functional, rehab approach to pelvic pain. When you visit one of our offices, you spend an hour with your doctor reviewing in detail your medical history and symptoms. Then, we perform an internal exam (no speculum) to evaluate your nerves and muscles. Together, we'll discuss an individual treatment plan that gets to the root cause of your pain and helps you to feel better. The best part: you can begin treatment the same day! At PRM, our mission is to decrease the time patients are suffering from pelvic pain symptoms. So what do I mean by prehab before an endometriosis surgery? So what that means is really optimizing your pelvic muscles in your pelvic nerves before surgery, making them the best they can be so that you can bounce back faster after surgery, you can use less medications, return to work and intercourse and exercise and sleeping better a lot faster. So what we mean is when your pelvic floor muscles are in spasm, right, they're actually weaker, so making them less spastic and when they're less spastic, they're actually less painful. And in addition, when your nerves are inflamed and irritated from having the endometriosis in your pelvis, that can also tend to make you have persistent pain. So calming the nerves down, decreasing as much inflammation as we can in the pelvis before surgery really will help you respond to your surgery better and bounce back faster and use less medications afterwards.
