The week we spent on holiday in the Lyngen Alps was not the best in terms of weather and avalanche risk. There was a lot of fresh snow and strong winds. At one point, we were stuck for two days in a different location because the roads were blocked due to high avalanche risk. At one roadblock, we waited for several hours to receive updates on whether the road would reopen. While waiting, we encountered a professional rescue task force. They were responding to an incident involving a group of ice climbers we had spoken to. The climbers had been hit by an avalanche: One fell into the water and managed to rescue himself. Another man was trapped in a sort of snow cave under the avalanche and called the police himself. After seven hours, he was rescued alive. All in all, you learn to appreciate the small things when you lose everything or are cut off from your accommodations, with just one pair of underwear in your skibag.
