In this upcoming Apereo Micro Conference, Olawale Fabiyi, HEMIS Technical Advisor at The Gambia’s Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science & Technology, will explore how open source can serve as a powerful connector between education, industry, and communities—particularly in emerging ecosystems where resources may be limited but innovation thrives. Drawing on his work with the Open Source Academy and Hack Weakend, Fabiyi will present a practical, human-centered case study designed to deliver universal insights for Apereo’s global community. Rather than framing open source solely as a technical endeavor, the session will highlight its role as a bridge: linking students with real-world opportunities, aligning academic learning with industry needs, and fostering collaboration across borders. For academics, the talk will demonstrate how open source can support project-based learning that is relevant, applied, and closely tied to student employability. Open source developers and community managers will gain a replicable blueprint for sustainable contributor growth, mentorship pathways, and community-driven event models—such as Hack Weakend—that can be adapted to different regions and contexts. Educational technologists will see how open pedagogy can be effectively implemented in resource-constrained environments, with clear and measurable outcomes. Woven throughout the session will be a compelling human story of agency, innovation, and global connection—one that challenges assumptions about where leadership and innovation originate and encourages participants to think beyond traditional boundaries. Using West Africa as a living example, Fabiyi will illustrate how intentional ecosystem-building can replace isolated initiatives with lasting, collaborative impact. This micro conference will closely align with Apereo’s commitment to bridging academia and industry, supporting open source ecosystem growth, and inspiring the next generation of contributors.
