Recent survey on Khoja Shia Ithna-Asheri Muslim (KSIM) Identity by the team of “The Awakening Project” do show that our religion shapes a distinct identity amongst second and third generation Khoja Shia Itna asheri Gujaratis in the UK. The formation of identity is a complex phenomenon and around which all must construct meaning. We give Identity to every child born in the community. This identity is essential to his or her psychological functioning. It is clear in today’s multi-ethnic Britain, USA and canada that ethnic identity may not be straightforward. It is evolving as globalisation unfolds. Label chosen by younger generation of our community to express their individual ethnic identity and cultural adaptation strategies such as lifestyle choices made by an individual, particularly in the West, are employed by our youth in order to make sense of their bilingual and bi-cultural lives. The fact is that KSIMuslim community has survived for nearly 160 years and that shows its versatility and adaptability.
