Opposition is one of the most important ideas in chess endgames In this video, I teach opposition the way I teach it to my students: starting with a simple king-only exercise that forces you to understand how opposition really works. We cover: What opposition actually is (including distant opposition) Why giving up opposition on move one can lose the position. How to maintain opposition using square color as a shortcut. How and when to break opposition to outflank your opponent. Why this exact exercise applies directly to king and pawn endgames. Only after understanding the king-only position do we add a pawn — and you’ll see that it’s the same problem, just with a purpose. If you can solve the first exercise, you’ll understand: How to escort pawns to promotion. How to win or draw critical king endgames. Why opposition decides so many practical positions. This is foundational endgame technique that every serious chess player needs.
