African Development Bank (AfDB) President Dr. Akinwumi Adesina announced that Nigeria’s GDP per capita has plummeted to 824 compared to the 1,847 recorded in 1960. In his keynote address at the 20th anniversary dinner of Chapel Hill Denham, he attributed this decline to policy missteps, over-reliance on crude oil, and underinvestment in key sectors. The IMF also reported a decrease to $835, significantly lower than previous projections. Segun Sopitan, Principal Partner at Woodridge and Scott Consulting, explores the missed policy opportunities, the impact of crude oil dependency, and institutional weaknesses hindering reform. We’ll also compare Nigeria's GDP per capita to other African nations and assess the government's efforts in attracting foreign investment and enhancing productivity in non-oil sectors.
