Crazy how Celtics basketball fans had to wait a full year for Larry to be eligible to play. This was before his epic showdown with Magic Johnson in the NCAA tournament. Bird hadn’t yet even hit his collegiate stride as a ball player when Auerbach plucked him. Virtually unknown, all of Boston had to wait and wonder about the savior named Bird. We’ve released minis of Tom Heinsohn speculating about Larry’s ability to handle pressure (lol) and in this short from Bob Lobell’s Tuesday night sports show on WGBH, we have Dave Cowens admitting he “knew nothing” about the Bird man.
