What we know of the life of Mudarra we owe exclusively to the author himself, who in the forewarding letter dedicated his work to Don Luys Zapata, saying «... Having the confidence of those who know me and know the days that I have been working in the study of the vihuela; who for this, and because of knowing that I was raised in the home of the Most Illustrious Duque del Infantado, my masters Don Diego Hurtado de Mendoza, who God has in His glory, and Don Iñigo López, who lives today and may God our Lord keep him, where there were excellent men of all kinds of Music: they will think that in these my Books there may be some small particle of such good as is seen in that house and in other parts of Spain and Italy». Don Diego Hurtado de Mendoza, was the third Duque del Infantado, and died in 1531, and his son, Don Iñigo López de Mendoza, fourth Duque del Infantado, «a very good friend of books and of communicating with learned and wise men», died in 1566 and aided the theological studies of Mudarra, which carried the latter in 1547 to the keeping of the Canon of the Cathedral of Seville. A year before, in 1546, Mudarra published his work «Tres libros de música en cifras para vihuela» and although in his forewarding letter he included an exhaulted remembrance to his protectors the Duques del Infantado, the truth is that the work was dedicated to Don Luys Zapata, the old man who was Chamber Counselor of the Catholic Kings, a man well versed in art and skilled in music who without a single doubt was he who had ordered the book of Mudarra published. As can be seen there is little known about Alonso Mudarra: neither his place of origin, nor the date of his birth have been clarified, and only Higinio Anglés, studying the chapel records of the Cathedral Church of Seville, could confirm that our musician was already cited in those acts from 1547, and that in 1565 he was named «Visitor of the Ciborium», in 1568 participated in the construction of the organ of the Cathedral, and on the first of April of 1580, Good Friday, died bequeathing his goods, or part of them, to the Church. With respect to the «Tres libros de música en cifras para vihuela», only two copies of the work are known to us today: one, complete, although not in perfect condition: and another, deteriorated, from which several pages are missing. The first is found in the Library of El Escorial, having come from the Barbieri collection, and the other is preserved in the National Library of Madrid. Both belong to the 1546 edition, the only one known. The work contains a total of seventy-seven compositions, originals for the most part, although we also find variations of the works of Josquin, Willaert, Gombert, and Escobar. According to their form there are 27 Fantasies, 9 Tientos, 1 Variation on a theme, 4 Dance Airs, 3 Parts of the Mass, 4 Glosses, 3 Motets, 3 Romances, 3 Songs, 7 Sonnets, 4 Verses, 5 Christmas Carols, 2 Psalms and 2 Romanescas. The Three Books are balanced in their distribution. In the First Book there are several easy Fantasies at the beginning with a didactic purpose. A group of «minor works», another of «compositions» of Joaquín y Ludovico, and the last of «major works». The Second Book includes Tientos, Fantasies and Glosses placed very orderly in the eight volumes, and the Third Book is dedicated to pieces for song and vihuela, with an easy piece, the Tiento, written for harp and organ.
