When civilian production resumed after World War I, Matchless designed a model that was ideally suited as a sidecar machine: the Model "H". The H/1 was equipped with a JAP engine, while the H/2 was powered by a Swiss MAG power unit. The Model H was unique in that it was only offered as a motorbike combination, with an integral sidecar chassis, a sprung sidecar wheel, swingarm rear suspension and electric lighting. Further specifications included fully enclosed front and rear chains, interchangeable wheels, leg shields, pressed steel running boards with corrugated top and a folding luggage rack with spare wheel. This Matchless is equipped with the well-known, robust 976cc JAP V-twin side-valve engine and the 3-speed gearbox is of its own design. In "The Motor Cycle" of 1 December 1920, we read, "The Matchless combination remains practically unchanged for the coming season, as the 1920 design has given unconditional satisfaction for the past 12 months. One small point we were pleased to note, however, was a considerable improvement in the hub bearings. (...) They are possibly the most massive hubs in the show and should withstand the worst possible treatment in this country or anywhere else."
