Discover Ao Nang, Krabi - Emerald Pool, Hot Springs & Tiger Cave Temple

How we travelled across Thailand and how much it cost. After a quick recap of our Thailand adventure so far we visit the stunning location of Ao Nang and incredible sunsets on the beach. There are 2 reasons for visiting Thailand; firstly Travel is cheap here. Secondly the scenery is spectacular and if we’d flown we would have missed seeing the lush landscape. To give an overview of our Thai travel we set off from Bangkok train station which was was huge. We took a very cheap overnight train to Chumphon. Peg booked us the cheapest carriage that was literally seats with fans rather than proper air con. This cost about £7.50 each. When we arrived at Chumphon we paid 300 baht (just over £7) for a transfer taxi to the pier. The ferry from lompraya pier chumpon to Koh Tao was £17 each. This leg of the journey from Bangkok to Koh Tao cost £54 in total for both of us. On the next leg of our Thai adventure we paid £17 each for the ferry from Koh Tao to Don Sak pier and 1000 baht, just over £20 in a ‘taxi’ to take us 32 km from the port to the sea breeze guest house in Khanom. Koh Tao to Khanom cost £52 for both of us. On the last leg of our Thai adventure we took a bus from Don sak to Krabi (£10 each). We probably spent about the same on a luxury minibus that got us back to Don Sak in order to catch that bus. We paid another 300 baht (£7)for a transfer from from Krabi bus station to our hotel. In Ao Nang. This last leg of the journey cost us no more than £47 for both of us. This meant our total transport costs to travel across 1st leg Bangkok to Koh Tao £54 2nd leg Koh Tao to Khanom £52 3rd leg Khanom to Ao Nang £ 47 Total Thai travel was £153 How far would that budget take you in the UK? We stayed at the bluesotel and splashed out on a room with a pool outside. The hotel was lovely and quite busy compared to anywhere else we’d stayed. To get there we needed to be up early, packed and off from Khanom to Krabi Bus Terminal then onto Ao Nang for 3 nights. We booked a tour for the next day and went for the cheaper option of the hot springs waterfall, the emerald pool and the tiger cave temple. The more expensive one had a smaller number of people. Our one wasn’t the most speedy and It took about 1.5 hours just to gather all of the guests before we finally set off. The hot springs were and not nearly as smelly as the ones we have visited in NZ. The next stop was the emerald pool it was about a one km walk then the blue pool which was built up to be even more beautiful was another 600 metres up the track. We went there first so we could return to swim at the emerald pool. On the way we saw a big lizard we thought it was a water monitor. The guide called it Komodo but it wasn’t. The swim on the emerald pool was refreshing even though it was busy. It was hard to relax when we were all under strict instructions of how long we had, what time to be back and not to miss the bus. Next stop was the tiger cave temple. Just before we got there the heavens opened and we we treated to a thunderstorm. This meant we couldn’t walk the steps to see the Buddha on the top of the 1200 steep steps. ‘Too slippery! ‘ Our day trip was cut rather short to a visit inside the temple at the base of the mountain. We saw monkeys and some bee hives and all got soaked despite our allocated ponchos. That said we were not unhappy about getting back to the hotel and having a bath. We have both missed baths since starting our nomadic lifestyle. Our room has a fab deep bath and we both had a good soak. That evening we walked along Ao nang beach to see the sunset then walked to ‘enjoy’ restaurant and had a lovely dinner of tempura veg, chicken satay chicken basil and chicken sweet chilli all washed down with a large singha beer and sprite making two shandies one each. We watched television that evening when we got back then had a really good sleep. It was good to be in a comfortable bed with soft pillows. The last day we did very little, the weather was appalling. We did manage to walk on the beach for the sunset which was beautiful. Then we were off to Krabi airport the next morning for our next adventure in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia.
