Art, music, yoga, breathwork, and the sound of healing bowls reverberating through the air across the yard, D-yard inside Arizona’s Perryville Prison for women. “Blank Canvas”, a new short documentary film, reveals incarceration as you’ve never seen before. "Blank Canvas” is a thought-provoking, real-life story of second chances and societal healing offering an exclusive look inside the Lumley Unit within Arizona’s Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation and Reentry’s women’s prison, Perryville. (ADCRR). Moving away from a punishment only model, ADCRR is reimagining corrections, which includes investing more resources in trauma-informed programming to get to the root causes of why people make destructive life choices. With Director Dr. Ryan Thornell at the helm, ADCRR is breaking barriers by partnering with providers to do something that’s never been done before inside a state prison: building holistic healing centers on the yards housing the highest risk populations. From individuals convicted for violent crimes to those diagnosed with serious mental illness, ADCRR is prioritizing helping the population begin their healing journey while incarcerated, ensuring our communities are safer when they are released. Early data shows that ADCRR’s approach is making an incredible impact in a short amount of time. Director Thornell, recognized as a correctional change agent and sought after thought leader in correctional reform, explains why he’s changing the department’s approach, “Historically, corrections has interpreted its public safety responsibility to mean, people need to stay locked up safely and securely behind fences and walls, but for me, the public safety responsibility of corrections goes further. I feel a sense of responsibility to the community that these men and women who will be released back into Arizona communities at some point, that we’ve done our due diligence to ensure they’ve been given every opportunity to rehabilitate." In 2024, ADCRR partnered with Art Of Our Soul to build the first ever holistic healing studio inside a prison yard and provide daily programming. Art Of Our Soul offers a world of color and compassion to change the environment for incarcerated people. By doing that, the women housed at Perryville address their trauma on a deeper, more healing level. Art therapy, yoga and sound bowl healing classes are available for both inmates and staff. As Founder Brandon Lee puts it, “This is about rehabilitation to make our community safer, and our local economy stronger. We should all believe in second chances. If we invest in programming that helps truly correct someone’s behavior, then our communities will be better off for it.” “Blank Canvas” is produced by Inspired Media 360 and premieres on YouTube April 17. ### Contact: Carey Pena, Founder Inspired Media 360 Email: [email protected]
