Is your flax ready to pull from the retting tank? Maybe. Maybe not. After about 3 days, you should start checking your stalks. I pull from the center, or at least not those on the surface of the pile of flax. I want to know that the flax deep in the pile is ready. So after 3 days, pull a few stalks and let them dry fully. Be sure it is in a place in the sun that gets hot enough to dry a few stalks within a few hours. Break them between your fingers, and if all the center core falls easily away, it will be ready. Check daily. Once it is ready, you need to pull it out and lay it out in the sun where it can dry quickly. I also give my flax a good rinse with fresh water to remove some of the yucky water and to help stop the retting process. The stalks should sound crispy, and you don’t want ribbons of flax but fibers of flax after you break your sample. Do not rely upon the wet fibers to determine if it is ready or not. I only use the wet fibers to determine when I should start checking the stalks dry. I have more video on the subject if you hunt around my site. @abittwisted
