Today I've got a huge range in prices of amps, all the way from an inexpensive amp sim, to a boutique VHT worth around $2000! I recorded a variety of riffs on my 8-string guitar to show off different styles and tunings, so we have a wide range of samples. The riffs are double-tracked then re-amped (same performances) through the exact same cab and mic setup, so the only variable is the amp and how it's dialed in. I did my best to match up the amps by ear, but in the second demo, I applied a bit of extra EQ - again, by ear - to balance out the tones and further isolate if there's any major differences. While all amps are different, I think it's safe to say you rarely "need" a particular amp for a particular tone, though it can help. I originally recorded the amp sim through a solid state power amp live through the cab, but I didn't nail the tone as much as I'd like, and since I recorded an IR while doing this, I used that afterwards and re-did that tone to be even closer to the others, so close in fact, that I didn't EQ it in the second demo!
