In the previous chapter we stayed sailing along the Unare River towards Clarines, as we wanted to emulate the journey that the Spanish made between 1700 and 1800, when in their sailing boats they left the sea and entered this river to see what it had in store for them. the channel I try to imagine the amazement navigating through that dense vegetation to reach a town where the local indigenous people, brave warriors, ended up taking them out so that they would leave them in peace and that is how the city was founded on other properties, a story that I tell you here today. However, they built the Clarines church, a colonial jewel that began to be built in 1755, was partially completed in 1789 and it was not until 1912 when it was completely finished. Beautiful, simple on the outside and with extraordinary images of saints, almost all of colonial origin. Here the neighbors welcomed us to tell the story, express pride in their church and lament the deterioration due to lack of maintenance. It was after this visit that I started eating at a grocery store where they invited me to try desserts and it occurred to me that this is a journey of praying and eating, because just as I visited the iconic Clarines church, then I entered that jewel, which is the church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, on a hill in Píritu, which remains impeccable. And later I determined to reach an unknown jewel that is the church of El Pilar, as iconic and valuable as the other two, but unknown because it is in a remote, small town, with few inhabitants who take care of it with great effort and right now They are very sad because it is collapsing with the leaks. Along these roads is also Capachal, a town whose greatest pride is not a church, but the 66 hectares of stone plums that they have cared for and maintained for years and which has given rise to the “Plum Festival”, now with 37 editions. But this year the traditional small fruits, red on the outside and yellow on the inside, decided not to ripen by the expected date. The bushes are heavy, but the plums are still green and small. It seems that some rain fell at the wrong time and also a worm that eats them and withers them. However, no one is daunted. The community harvested the pintones plums, they went out to sell them on the road and the community made a fortune in wines, jams, cakes, quesillo, mazamorra, guasacaca and even spicy. Fascinating variety. Also in the desire to eat, in addition to praying, I decided to visit several of the cheese shops that abound in the area, a classic stop for visitors. This is a journey of human warmth. Of great belonging. Of communities proud of how little or much they have and their eagerness to share it with those who visit them. I was again moved. It is an authentic demonstration of the most genuine of our people. We are tremendous hosts and we love our land.
