Dr. Bonny Whalen, Dartmouth Health Children's pediatrician, medical director of the Newborn Nursery at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC) in Lebanon, New Hampshire, and a certified lactation consultant, discusses the Baby-Friendly® initiative. In June 2012, DHMC received recognition as a Baby-Friendly birth facility, as designated by Baby-Friendly USA, Inc. In DHMC's Birthing Pavilion, the practice is to keep baby and parents together in the same room, where most screenings and procedures are done. "Our parents expressed relief and a sense of security that they're able to keep the baby with them just about all of the time," says DHMC Lactation Coordinator Lisa Lamadriz. She added that such rooming-in lowers separation stress on the baby as well, and gives new parents a full opportunity to learn the baby's needs and rhythms. Baby-Friendly USA, Inc., is the U.S. authority for the implementation of the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI), a global program sponsored by the World Health Organization and the United Nations Children's Fund. The initiative encourages and recognizes hospitals and birthing centers that offer an optimal level of care for breastfeeding mothers and their babies. The prestigious international award recognizes birth facilities that offer breastfeeding mothers the information, confidence, and skills needed to successfully initiate and continue breastfeeding their babies. Baby-Friendly® hospitals and birth centers also uphold the International Code of Marketing of Breast Milk Substitutes by offering parents support, education, and educational materials that promote the use of human milk rather than other infant food or drinks, and by refusing to accept or distribute free or subsidized supplies of breast milk substitutes, nipples, and other feeding devices.
