I scoured the internet for videos about what it is like to feel friendless in college. Feeling like you have no friends might be a common experience for college students, but I couldn’t find any content about that. I only saw videos about being lonely AFTER college, as a post-grad, mourning the glory days of university. That’s not my story. I am lonely in college NOW, as an active student who is fighting these feelings. In this video, I talk about how the reality of loneliness settled in. I didn’t think finding community in college would be so hard, but once I realized that this was going to be a very hard challenge, I began thinking about any other people who might be sharing this challenge with me. I wonder about the young people who think that nobody cares about them, nobody would choose them, and nobody loves them. I wonder about how many girls sit in their dorms every Friday night, longing for a group of girls to go out with, but feeling like that will never happen. As I thought about the possibility that other people might be going through this with me, I realized that I might need to speak up. One of us will have to vocalize these struggles first if we want to find each other, relate to each other, and ultimately help each other. Being vulnerable is hard, but being lonely is harder.
