AUSCERT2025 - Under Attack: Leveraging military models and cyber warfare strategies by Kylie Watson

Cyber is known in military circles as the 5th frontier of war behind land, sea, air and space. Military research, methodologies and experiences can significantly contribute to the further improvement of cybersecurity technologies, and practices in the civilian sector, with both having a necessity for robust defences against emerging threats and protection of critical assets. The cyber security industry can learn a lot more from the military experience in the 5th frontier including decision making models, prioritisation, working under extreme pressure for mental health, training, and use of tools capable of neutralising potential cyber threats in real-time. Kylie will use stories and audience interaction to introduce some key military approaches that can be applied to people working in cyber security in civilian life. Lessons from the military experience will cover: Decision Making models such as VUCA, OODA and new AI; tips on how to prioritise under pressure especially with the advent of AI; a mental health model for those under 24/7 pressure; approaches for continuous training and skill development with the need to remain updated with the latest cybersecurity technologies; and tactics to choose the right defensive cyber tools. Kylie will take the audience on a journey of key lessons from these military models and approaches giving insights to attendees to bolster their defences, and helping ensure a capable workforce that maintains a proactive stance against cyber threats.
