Nilavai Paarthu Vaanam Sonnathu from the 1971 Tamil film Savale Samali is a philosophical and social commentary on untouchability and class struggle. Written by the legendary poet Kannadasan, the lyrics use metaphors of nature to critique human-made social divisions. The song's title translates to "The sky looked at the moon and said: 'Do not touch me.'" The lyrics describe the sky telling the moon and the earth telling the shadow not to touch them. It mentions the river reed telling the water and the night telling the day to stay away. These metaphors highlight the absurdity of humans practising "untouchability" (theendamai), suggesting it is as unnatural as the sky rejecting the moon. The song states that the concept of untouchability is not new, even referencing the story of Thiruneelakandar's wife, who famously refused to touch her husband. It asks poignant questions like, "Did the hand that mined gold ever see gold?" and "Did the hand that protected dharma ever see equality?" It critiques the irony of those who build temples being denied entry to them. Kannadasan argues that life cannot exist without "touch" or connection. He uses the analogy that if a father is not touched by a mother, neither "you nor I" would exist. Similarly, a tune is incomplete without a beat (thalam), and a song cannot touch the heart if the elements don't blend. In Savale Samali, the protagonist (played by Sivaji Ganesan) is a tenant farmer who faces oppression from wealthy landlords. The song is sung during a victory procession after he wins a local election, serving as a powerful anthem for social justice and the breakdown of class barriers.
