5/11/1939 Mission by Mr Cheese Map by 狂热菌 https://steamcommunity.com/workshop/f... On 11 May 1939, the Khalkhin Gol conflict began with a small but significant cavalry clash near the village of Nomonhan. A Mongolian cavalry unit, operating in what Mongolia claimed as its territory east of the Khalkhin Gol (Halha) River, encountered Manchukuo cavalry forces that had crossed into the disputed zone. What started as a routine border patrol confrontation quickly escalated into a sharp firefight, reflecting the long-standing ambiguity over the frontier between Mongolia and Manchukuo. The Mongolian troops, familiar with the terrain and acting aggressively, succeeded in pushing the Manchukuo cavalry back from the area. Although minor in scale, the May 11 cavalry fight had outsized consequences. The Manchukuo withdrawal prompted intervention by the Japanese Kwantung Army, which viewed the setback as both a territorial challenge and a blow to prestige. Japanese commanders soon reinforced the area with regular troops, artillery, and armor, transforming a localized cavalry skirmish into a major undeclared war against Soviet-backed Mongolia. Thus, the initial clash on May 11 served as the spark that ignited the broader Battle of Khalkhin Gol, one of the most decisive and consequential conflicts of 1939.
