You are choosing to starve millions of your own people for literally no reason. That’s what a federal judge essentially just told Donald Trump about his increasingly desperate fight to keep people from getting their food stamps, also known as SNAP. [Image] With this all starting last month when the White House was like, sorry, we can’t fund SNAP because of the shutdown. [Image] But critics were like, yo, there’s a nearly 5 billion dollar contingency fund for exactly that purpose. [Image, Image] So then the White House was like, dude, those funds are only for stuff like natural disasters. [B roll] But a judge was finally like, enough stalling, just fund the damn program. [Image] So then the White House was like, alright, alright, we’ll fund it, but only half — no, actually 65% — of the normal benefits. [Image] But on Thursday the judge was like, bro, the fuck? Cut out this nonsense. You have until tomorrow to fund SNAP in full. [Image] Saying, “People have gone without for too long. Not making payments to them for even another day is simply unacceptable. This should never happen in America.” [Quote] So now this morning, the White House appealed to a higher court for an emergency pause on that judge’s order, claiming that it’s absurd. [Image] With the government’s lawyers claiming that to fully fund SNAP, they would have to divert money from other programs, like school lunches. [Quote, find “lunches”] Saying, “This is a crisis, to be sure, but it is a crisis occasioned by congressional failure, and that can only be solved by congressional action.” [Quote] But critics argue that if Trump really wanted to fund SNAP, he would just do it. [Image] Because when he wants to do something, he moves around money, fires people, even breaks the law to get it done. [Image] But when he don’t want to do something, he insists on strictly following the law and claims the choice is totally out of his hands. [B roll] Either way, 42 million people have had to survive without food stamps in whatever way they can. [Image] Be it going to food banks, asking friends or family for help, scouring their pantries for cereal and ramen, even trying to kill their appetite with black coffee and just skipping meals. [Image, Image] With one woman telling NBC: “I will get hunger pains at some point, but I just ignore them.
